On the scent trail with Stefanie Hanssen

When you need comforting, what do you reach for? A cup of tea to warm your hands and soothe your nerves? A cosy blanket to wrap around your shoulders, or a hot water bottle to hop into bed with? So often comfort comes to us in a tactile form, but engaging our olfactory senses is an equally powerful way of helping us feel at ease. As the owner of Berlin’s fragrance boutique Frau Toni’s, Stefanie Hanssen knows all about the relaxing effect of scents. The granddaughter of the boutique’s namesake has grown up surrounded by fragrance – we took a moment out to find out her favourite comforting scents.

WHAT FRAGRANCE IS GOOD FOR RELAXING?

Definitely the favourite fragrance of my grandmother Toni-Louise: Rose de France. Delicate rose petals are combined with essential eucalyptus and fresh lemon. A small whiff will relax you on the spot.

WHAT ABOUT A FRAGRANCE TO RELAX THE NOSE AFTER AN UNPLEASANT DAY?

Search for a pure orange scent with a complex aroma that unfolds patiently: the ethereal notes of the peel connect with the juicy sweet orange inside to give this fragrance a rich vibrancy that is simply euphoric.

WHAT SMELLS LIKE HOME FOR YOU?

Our old apartment smells like a typical Berlin greenhouse: the linden tree! At the perfumery we actually offer a fragrance called "Linden Berlin," which carries the scent of early summer with rich fresh linden flowers before foliage.

WHAT FRAGRANCE DO YOU LOVE TO SMELL IN YOUR HOME?

Honestly, it would have to be the fragrance of linden I just described. My husband, son and I all love it!

WHAT SMELL GIVES YOU THE FEELING OF HOME?

We love to cook and bake together on the weekend. When the smell of fresh cinnamon waffles wafts throughout our apartment it really feels like home!
