Having already seen the transformations by Pepper from Heimetbaum and Jen from Love Chic Living, we present the third and final blogger feature in our Happy Home Makeover series: Ricarda from 23QM Stil.
23QM Stil blogger Ricarda Nieswandt
From the beginnings of an old, doer-upper…
For the queen of German Interior Bloggers, Ricarda’s home is her greatest inspiration. When she and her family moved in ten years ago, the 1918 Cologne-based home was a shell of its former glory.
Old, dysfunctional heaters, worn carpet and patterned wallpaper prevailed. Fast forward ten years, and the diamond has certainly come out of the rough. Taking renovations into her own hands, she lovingly refurbished the heaters, stripped the wallpaper, and peeled away carpet to reveal old wooden floorboards, giving the home a new lease on life.
“I think preserving all these vintage treasures is a way to show appreciation to the history of the house, and the people who have lived there before me,” Ricarda said, and feels this is the guiding principle when decorating or doing up their home.
… to an interior design blog
Once her children began school, Ricarda had time to dedicate herself to her second passion, blogging and sharing interior inspiration online. 23QM Stil has since become a full-time job, and, along with lecturing and training aspiring bloggers on online journalism, Ricarda also spearheads the blogst.de network, a platform connecting lifestyle bloggers from all over Germany on themes of interiors, DIY and design.
Vintage meets Skandi
Over time, Ricarda has developed her own unique style, which settles somewhere between vintage and Scandinavian chic. She loves combining old, family heritage pieces with bright, friendly furniture and Scandi-style living accessories made of natural materials such as wood, linen or cotton.
“When buying new things,” she confirms, “conscious consumption is important – especially as an interiors blogger” – the things she puts in her home should be beautiful but made to last, and not come at a cost to anyone or anything.
“It’s why,” she says, “I appreciate URBANARA’s products: they’re natural and I can trust the quality. It’s not always the case that you know what you’re getting. With the bed linen I used for the guest room makeover, I’m sure that I’ll be able to pass it on to my kids. ”
Recipe for a Happy Home
“Home is the most important place in the world. It embodies wellbeing, is brought to life by the people who live there, and who give it its own personality.”
Traveling too, has helped her define her style, and what home means to her. Travel memorabilia peppers her interior, and for her, are an expression of her personality.
But home itself should act as the canvas for life, and start off as a neutral space to add to…
BEFORE: A SPARSE BEDROOM
The guest bedroom, before her light Scandi touch, was a rather pragmatically decorated room that emanated little warmth or life.
The fold-out sofa that served as the bed was decked with old bed linen that gave off a distinctly ‘spare room’ feeling, While the bedside table and lamp were thoughtful, they felt a little like an afterthought, and lacked a cohesive theme.
In short, a good candidate for a Happy Home upgrade.
AFTER: SIMPLE, SCANDI MINIMALISM
Textiles were key. Ricarda followed her stylistic intuition when selecting her products, opting for picks in white and grey tones that put natural fibres in the spotlight.
The neutral palette harmonises with the natural wood floorboards, while the marble-base lamp compliments the new stool-come-bedside table, which in turn mirrors the round shape of the light bulb.
These subtle pairings put the focus on quality materials, and come together to create an overall mood that’s calm, bright, and welcoming.
It’s a space too that has been well appointed with luxe accessories, helping guests feel more at home.

A final word from the Queen of German interior bloggers: “Textiles in grey and white are brilliant all-rounders – there’s nothing they can’t be matched with. In my case, they complement the industrial look of the table lamp and the wooden floor, but all manner of tiles would work, too… it’s timeless chic.”
Her picks build on her own styled look and includes pieces that work well with the theme (and until the 26th February, 2017 are all 20% off).
