A Happy Home, by Pepper from Heimatbaum

DIY Christmas Wreath

For our sixth birthday celebrations, we asked three of our favourite interior bloggers to invite us into their home and, with the help of your favourites, make one corner a little happier. It’s a part of our ongoing ‘Make Your Home Happy’ campaign, which celebrates the promise we made to Homes everywhere all those years ago.

This week in the spotlight is Pepper from German interior blog Heimatbaum. Characterised by a minimal, bright, and warm aesthetic, her blog is a treasure trove of design advice, interior inspiration, and DIY ideas.

When she moved into her home two years ago with her husband and small daughter, she was positively bursting with design ideas… and since then, she hasn’t had a dull design moment.

Interior blogger Pepper

A stylish, lovingly-conceived environment is a must for the visual merchandiser since, as a freelancer, she spends much of her time working from home. Their house is characterised by an open and cordial atmosphere, immediately welcoming for the family and guests alike. An open fireplace in the living room, for example, ensures a special kind of warmth.

Heimatbaum’s trademark style: Skandi meets Ethno-chic

Blankets, of which there are a two-count minimum, are important for downtime.

The Heimatbaum blog has a distinctive style that combines the colours and forms of Scandinavian design with ethnic-inspired patterns and materials. Pepper loves combining light, neutral tones with interesting textures from nature, like furs, leather, and wood. Her passion for African handwork, which creeps into many corners, is owing to her grandfather, who worked as a missionary in the southern continent.

His collection of wooden sculptures find pride of place around her home, paired with more natural finds from the couple’s travels: driftwood from New Zealand driftwood, or a splendid, ever-growing collection of stones. Her favourite piece in her home is also wooden and weathered: a vintage school bench, used alternately as a coffee table and a desk in the children’s room.

And of URBANARA? The 28-year-old relishes the use of natural fibres and timeless, understated design: ‘It perfectly fulfils my wont of classic, light neutrals. The best example is my Visby Blanket, still going strong after six years,’ and consequently the number of years URBANARA is celebrating.

Before: un-loved bedroom storage corner

A neglected corner of Pepper’s bedroom has become her biggest style bugbear, relegated to storage corner that attracted her attention the moment she opened her eyes. The ‘Happy Home’ challenge was just the excuse she needed to give it a makeover.

…After: ethereal reading corner

First, Pepper tidied or donated the clutter, making way for the living room sofa and a Scandi coffee table. The biggest challenge she faced during the transformation? “The pitched ceiling, which practically halves the space. The sofa from the living room, though, let’s us make the most of it,” tucking neatly into the corner of the room.

To match her existing style, Pepper selected products in beige and white, which pick up on the natural stone wall under the ceiling slant. Her grandfather’s wooden relics make a fine ornamental edition to this neutral, harmonious palette. The textural silk and wool blankets break through the monotone hues to add interest… just enough to sit back, read, and switch off.

Must-haves for a Happy Reading Corner

Pepper’s recipe for a Happy Reading Corner, as the photographer for her beautiful blog, couldn’t do without her photography books and magazines stacked up on the coffee table. Blankets, of which there are a two-count minimum, are important for wrapping up in during downtime.

For lovers of colour, her word of advice: ‘My favourite colour pairings are from beige and neutral palettes – they’re warm and timeless. But if you’re looking for a little more colour, pink is simply a winning combination.’

It’s all in the details
