Whether they’re made from luxurious soft wool, beautifully textured wool and cotton combinations, or natural fibres such as jute, both plain and patterned rugs can transform the appearance of your room as well as its feel underfoot. Rug care isn’t onerous, and just a little know-how will ensure yours last and stay looking good. Use these simple guidelines.
HOW TO CARE FOR RUGS
It’s best to lay your rug over a rug underlay, which will help it remain in place and keep both it and the flooring underneath in the best condition. To preserve their original colour, you should keep rugs out of direct sunlight.
Regular vacuuming to remove dirt and grit will keep your rug clean. Use a suction-only vacuum or make sure the beater bar is lifted and be especially careful at the edges and on any areas of fringing.
3. SHAKING & BEATING
The traditional way of cleaning a rug really does pay dividends. Take your rug outside and shake it then, if you can, hang it from a washing line and beat it.
4. STAIN REMOVAL
If you spill something on your rug, deal with it immediately. Blot with paper towels to absorb what’s been spilled. To remove a stain, dab it with a damp cloth. Don’t use detergents, and don’t rub at the stain. If this isn’t sufficient to remove the stain, take the rug to a dry cleaner, but check the label first.
