November: a warm welcome

IIs there really such a thing as ‘the perfect guest’? What typifies a good host? During the festive season we find ourselves being both guest and host, often in equal measure.

As we roll towards December, the home becomes a hub of activity: getting the guest room ready, wrapping presents, writing invitations and researching new recipes to accommodate for diverse palates. Ensuring your guests have their needs met can be taxing, but only if you let it be. Enlist your family to help out and make your festive season a success. After all, Christmas is all about spending time with the ones we love.

If you’re on the receiving end, little signs of gratitude are key. If you’re staying for a few days, don’t be afraid to pick up that dish cloth and help dry up after dinner. Your host may object at first, but those moments in the kitchen together are a great chance to catch up one-on-one (plus, everyone knows the real party takes place in the kitchen). Once you’re home, don’t forget to pop a thank you note in the post – in this age of instant messaging, the small effort will be appreciated.

Whether you are hosting or visiting friends, it’s the little touches that go a long way. From now until the new year we’ll be sharing plenty of stories that show you how to give your home those sweet, seasonal touches, alongside a variety of gift guides, recipes and DIY projects. Here’s to a smooth countdown to Christmas!
