Country style home: get the look

Country house look - the bedroom
Country house look - bathroom
Country house look - the entrance

Summers in the garden, autumn spent in the nature, winters by the fireplace… in spite of our love of urban life (and against all practical considerations), from time to time, our need for fresh country air and quiet living creep up on us. For those looking to capture the wholesome feeling of a country-style home in the city, here's how to get the cottage style look and enjoy the combination of nostalgic tradition and romantic flair.

Country house décor: a muted colour palette

Whether you’re decorating for the living room, bedroom or dining room, country house style is pared back and neutral. Warm natural tones, fresh pastels and traditional patterns – such as plaids and floral motifs – bring the nature indoors. Mix up your pale and earthy tones with bold stripes, colourful accents, and textural contrasts to steer clear of a finish that’s overly nostalgic.

Classic colour palettes for a country-style home range from the traditional creams and whites to beiges and soft browns, right up to the nautical-feeling combinations of navy and pale blue. Shy away from patterns and motifs, or introduce them subtly through pale and complementary (not contrasting) shades. Metal tones like copper and brass round off the look and give a modern flair.

Country house feel through texture

In addition to your colour palette, texture brings interest to your home and helps achieve a rustic ambience. Tactile finishes, introduced via weaves or other coarse or ridged materials, are reminiscent of traditional handicrafts. Fringe any smooth or sleek lines with flanges and pleats. In the living room, soften the lines of your couch with a slipcover and wool throws. In the bedroom, dress your bed with a valance, a quilted bedspread and piles of throw cushions. Accessorise with flea market finds (or your family’s old knickknacks) to create a vintage, lived-in feel.

A country style kitchen

A kitchen in a country house is a place of work, so lay the rug to prove it. Choose a hard-wearing textural design made of jute or flat-woven cotton, which are durable and often reversible. Select mismatched plates (think blue & white and floral with old silver cutlery – and utensils and boards made from stone and wood. Make sure to have a healthy supply of natural table and kitchen linens, too: cotton tea towels, linen aprons, and both patterned and block-coloured table cloths and placemats perfectly set the scene. Hang bunches of dried herbs on the wall or above your workspace, and a brass or metallic light fixture over your kitchen table to complete the look.

A country house bathroom

Wood is an important material in the country house, and no less in the bathroom. Without the right existing fixtures, it can be tricky to get the look, but a few country elements can help: use a large wooden board or tray to place all your toiletries on, and choose porcelain or ceramic accessories as your toothbrush holder, soap dispenser and toilet brush. Select fluffy, terry weave towels in cream and beige. If space permits, fold the towels, spray them with a spritz of linen water (a true country house accessory), and display them on a simple wooden horse. Replace your white toilet seat with a wooden or black design. Get rid of the plastic shower curtain (plastic and country style simply don’t mix) and replace it for one in a natural fabric like linen. Add a candle or two to your side table plus a few fresh-cut flowers in a pastel coloured vase and voilà: a step towards a country style bathroom, even if you don’t have the amenities to match.

Set the country farmhouse scene with the right ambience

The country house look is all about cosiness – there’s very little in the way of shiny surfaces and cool palettes. The same applies for lighting. Warm, iridescent bulbs and tables lamps are right at home in this style. If you’re not lucky enough to have an open fireplace, try and create the feel by adding lots of candles on your coffee table and mantle. For the full sensory experience, pick scented candles with classic fragrances like lavender, jasmine and rose, which capture the feeling of a farmhouse style cottage.
