Essential oils are natural oils which exist in plants and are typically obtained by distillation. The oil often carries the characteristic scent, or essence, of the plant, hence the term ‘essential oil’. They are used in perfumes, cosmetics, candles, soaps and other products.
Properties and qualities
Essential oils often have a pleasant smell, making them an excellent choice as household scents. As they are natural, they are free from chemicals and harmful ingredients and so are completely safe to use at home. This is in contrast to their synthetic oil counterparts which are derived from petrochemicals making them toxic which can be harmful to health.
As essential oils are typically used in candles and oil burners, they are prepared for safe use in these products. However, it is advised to keep the raw material oils away from direct flames and store them in a cool dark place. For best results, refer to the care instructions on your oil’s label.
